The entry sequence to Descanso Gardens features a series of interlocking California Craftsman buildings that fit well with their naturalistic surroundings.

Descanso Gardens is located in La Canada Flintridge, California.

In addition to The Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland, The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla finally establishes a real monument to California Craftsman architecture. The style of these structures is in keeping with the residential origins of California Craftsman, but the scale is almost overwhelming, especially in the case of The Grand Californian.

Incidentally, a complimentary one-hour walking tour is offered daily by the concierge in Anaheim, and I highly recommend it. The Guest Relations desk in the Great Hall arranges reservations, which are required for the tour.

Industrial design, which originated from the Arts and Crafts movement, has helped to define the Target brand and differentiate it from competitors for quite a while now. Enlisting famous architects and designers to create mundane, everyday items was brilliant and allowed Target to offer some exclusive merchandise at a premium to help offset the low-profit-margin it receives from selling commodities elsewhere in the store.

I can seriously say I enjoy shopping there.

Chipotle locates in historic districts wherever possible, and it designs each of its locations individually, but with the same humble and natural materials.

Each restaurant additionally features one dominant art piece that is commissioned of Chipotle's resident artist and is comprised by the same blonde hardwood and stainless steel that fills the rest of the space.

The park features Craftsman buildings, gazebos, and pergolas interspersed among expansive citrus groves covering the hillsides of Riverside, California.

Several new and very large commercial properties in southern California are embracing Craftsman architecture, and much of this new construction is quite handsome. I am very excited about the renewed interest in the style and the design philosophy, and I'll try to get a few images posted to this "tribe" soon.

The Grand Californian Hotel, at Disneyland (2001) is probably most responsible for this greater popularity, and although the design of the resort does not totally adhere to Craftsman philosophy, I highly recommend The Art of the Craft Tour, which is conducted daily by the concierges on the west side of The Great Hall. The tour is complimentary to the general public, but reservations are required.

Many of these other new buildings are not yet open, but are scheduled to be completed near the first of the year. Among them are the unlikely prospects of an enormous Indian casino, a strip mall, and a huge, but nicely-conceived mixed-use development in Rancho Cucamonga.
